Cardinal Newman Testimonials

A good education for students including their personal development & academic achievement. Ofsted 2013

Partial Closure 18-20th March 2020

Dear parents and carers,

As you are more than aware, the situation regarding the COVID-19 Coronavirus is ever changing and we are living in unprecedented times.  Cardinal Newman has been affected today by high levels of staff absence and only through good will have we been able to maintain a full timetable for all pupils.  Tomorrow we are already aware that we will have even higher levels of staff absence, predominantly as a result of staff having to self-isolate, following government guidelines.  We will be unable to follow the normal timetable and some groups will have to be re-organised.  I have had a tremendous response from staff and am very proud of the community spirit that was in evidence from all staff and pupils alike.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, we are already aware of an increased number of staff who will be absent which means we will not be able to staff all classes, particularly if an increased number of staff are forced to self-isolate.  Therefore we have decided that YEAR 8 and YEAR 9 PUPILS will NOT attend school for the rest of this week, 18th March-20th March.  All other pupils are expected to attend as normal.  These year groups were chosen to reflect their levels of independence compared to their younger peers as well as not preparing for external examinations.

Year 8 and 9 will be able to access all the work necessary on Show My Homework from tomorrow afternoon (staff will be unable to set work until they have finished teaching for the day).

At this stage I am unable to confirm arrangements for anything beyond this week.  We will continue to be led by announcements from the Prime Minister and our own staffing situation.  However, I will do my utmost to keep you informed as soon as updates become available.  Please also note that there will be no after school extra-curricular activities, clubs detentions and interventions aside from those for Year 11 exam preparation, until further notice.

If you have concerns regarding your child’s health please refer to the up to date guidelines from Public Health England If you child has developed a persistent cough or has a temperature above 37.8 please do NOT send them into school and inform the school via parent mail.

Despite rumours on social media and amongst pupils there are no confirmed cases of the COVID-19 Coronavirus amongst staff or pupils at Cardinal Newman School.

Please encourage your child to make every effort with their studies, whether at home or at school. The more of a routine that can be established, the less unsettling the current situation is for all.   This is a challenging and stressful time and I am very aware of the impact that partially closing the school has on families, so please be assured this is not a decision I have taken lightly.

Yours sincerely,

Mr Bull
