Jubilee Year of Mercy

The doors for the Year of Mercy closed on Sunday 13th November 2016

Pope Francis has proclaimed an Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy, which begins today, 8th December - the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. The idea of a Jubilee Year comes from the Old Testament where this marked a time for special honour of God. Every seven years fields would be left fallow for a rest and after seven times seven years, the 50th year was one of Jubilee. Any land was returned to its original owners (a means of redistributing wealth), pardon was granted and all debts were forgiven. God’s mercy was celebrated.

During this year we are asked to celebrate and proclaim God’s love and mercy. We will be exploring this theme in school with events and reflections throughout the year.
