Dear Parents/Carers,

Due to the increase in Scarlet Fever nationally, public health advice is being circulated to all schools and nurseries. Please find a Public Health fact sheet attached with information and frequently asked questions. If you have any concerns please contact your G.P. Can I stress that we have not been notified of any cases of Scarlet Fever in Cardinal Newman School at the moment.

Joe Richardson

The school has a full time Medical Assistant who is trained in First Aid.  She is available in the Medical Room if a student is ill, injured or needs medication administering during the school day.

Paracetamol (and other pain relieving medication)

Paracetamol is not available for students from the Medical Room.  Students are discouraged from carrying pain relief tablets, however, if a parent/guardian wishes their child to carry one dose of medication for self-administration, a consent form/letter is required, signed by the parent/guardian and dated.  Students need to carry the signed consent form/letter with them e.g. in their school diary.  Any self-administered medication is not the responsibility of the Medical Room.

Please note that the school does not provide treatment for injuries sustained at home.

IMMUNISATIONS:

The School Nursing Service will be in school on the following dates to administer Immunisations to the Students:

Year 8 (Girls only) – HPV 1st Dose – Thursday 10th January 2019

Year 8 (Girls only) – HPV 2nd Dose – Wednesday 10th July 2019

Year 9 (whole year group) – Diphtheria, Tetanus and Inactivated Polio (Td/IPV) and Meningitis ACWY – Wednesday 27th and Thursday 28th March 2019 – Consent Forms will be sent home nearer the time and a text will be sent informing you they are coming home.

INFECTIOUS DISEASES:

Please keep the school informed if your child is diagnosed with an infectious disease, e.g. chickenpox, measles, German measles, etc. Please also check with your GP the duration of time your child needs to be kept away from school.

48-HOUR RULE:

It is recommended by Health Protection Agency (HPA), that Students who have vomiting and/or diarrhoea should be kept at home for 48 hours from the LAST episode of vomiting and/or diarrhoea.

MEDICAL ROOM VISITS:

Students visiting the Medical Room due to injury or illness will have a small explanation written in the “Medical Room Visits” section in their Planner. Where an injury or illness requires the Student to be sent home, a phone call will be made to the parent/carer. For this reason, please ensure the school is kept up to date of any contact detail changes.

MEDICATION:

If a Student needs to take medication at school, this MUST be provided in its original box/packaging and MUST be accompanied by a note from parents or by filling in the schools Parental Consent Form, available from the Medical Room or from the School Website. Without this written consent, we will be unable to administer any medication.

MEDICAL CONDITIONS:

Please keep the Medical Room staff informed of any Students with newly diagnosed medical conditions, or Students who have changes to existing medical conditions, in order that we can keep all records up to date.

CRUTCHES:

Parents MUST inform the Medical Room staff if a Student needs to come to school on crutches. On their return to school, the student MUST come to the Medical Room in order that they can be assessed by the Medical Room staff to ensure their safety whilst moving around the school.

ASTHMA INHALERS:

Students who are diagnosed as having Asthma, MUST carry their NAMED inhalers around with them. It is particularly important that they remember to take their inhalers out with them whilst doing PE as the Medical Room staff do not have access to the PE changing rooms. If you require a spare to be kept in the Medical Room, please do not hesitate to contact the Medical Room staff.

EPIPENS:

Students who have been prescribed an Epipen, MUST carry this with them at all times. If you require a spare to be kept in the Medical Room, please do not hesitate to contact the Medical Room staff.

If you have any further queries or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the Medical Room staff:
