Catholic Life

Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.

Colossians 3:12

Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education is integral to a lifelong learning process where students are guided to make responsible and well informed decisions. As a Catholic community, it is also about encouraging them to recognise they have been uniquely created in the image of God and to understand their special worth and value. Taught in tutor groups, it should encourage relationships and discussion in an environment that is recognised as a safe and non-judgemental space.

The skills and attributes they learn will help pupils to stay healthy, safe and prepare them for life and work in modern Britain. When taught well, PSHE education helps pupils to achieve their academic potential by supporting their wellbeing and tackling issues that can affect their ability to learn, such as anxiety and unhealthy relationships. PSHE education helps pupils to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society who understand the law and can recognise healthy and unhealthy behaviours. From making responsible decisions about alcohol to succeeding in their first job, PSHE education helps pupils to manage many of the most critical opportunities, challenges and responsibilities they will face growing up.

PSHE also adapts to the relevant issues in society and teaches students core skills of communication, teamwork and critical thinking. As such it is a fundamental part of their journey through school and is valued by staff and students; it is part of a holistic approach to education that focuses not just on academia but also on their social, moral and spiritual development.

At Cardinal Newman we have timetabled PSHE lessons (1 per fortnight) as well as drop down days to learn and explore different topics.  PSHE is delivered by tutors and has a dedicated member of staff who is the PSHE lead.
